The city of Delphi’s Wastewater Department is responsible for the effective treatment of wastewater transported from residences and businesses through distribution lines to the city’s wastewater treatment plant on the southwest edge of town. Included in the duties of department employees are the maintenance of the wastewater plant itself, maintenance on seven lift stations, upkeep and repair of several miles of sewer lines.
The department also monitors the wastewater treatment system and bio-solids disposal, and makes regular reports to Indiana Department of Environmental Management and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Department employees handle all situations that arise when major rain events or breakdowns occur that adversely affect the system.
Once waste arrives at the treatment plant it is handled according to Indiana Department of Environmental Management and Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. Safe, treated effluent is then discharged. Delphi's plant is a Class III major facility and requires the main operator to possess a Class III State of Indiana certification license. Twenty continuing education units are required every two years to keep the license valid.
